Nearly 55% of businesses around the globe are interested and familiar with IoT technology advantages, according to an online research presented by Strategy Analytics IoT in 2015. Around 30% of companies have already utilized IoT technology in the format of an app, hardware or a device.

As the business potential of IoT applications grows, for internal company applications and those for outside sales, a simple solution will produce the best adoption rates, both for making changes to the business model itself and for producing a new product or upgrading an existing one.

What IoT looks like

A typical IoT system represents a seamless network infrastructure that includes data collecting sensors, cloud services, analytic tools and modules that communicate processed data.

Early adopters of IoT say they have noticed the benefits of pivoting their business model to IoT development. Looking at the scope of fields, where IoT has already become helpful is impressive:

  • Health-management includes wearable technologies (tracking health, exercise, medication schedules, and remote transmission of medical information to professionals;
  • Smart home technology (energy use, heating management, tracking lost keys, and plant care;
  • Industry (monitoring equipment to prevent or repair malfunctions, A/B video testing and resource and asset usage for farmers;
  • Environmental health (air pollution levels, tracking water levels to prevent flooding and safeguarding wildlife;
  • City life (effective and efficient street lights; alerting city officials when garbage bins need emptying and receiving real-time information about your environment such as temperature, humidity, air pollutants and allergens

This list is a smattering of uses with many more innovations to come that will reinvent the way human beings interact using technology to improve the quality of life.

Where to start with a first IoT project

  • Make your first IoT project a simple solution.

Start with a small implementation like an application, track every step you make and evaluate your first results in IoT. Successful small projects can be integrated later or expanded into larger projects, as your needs grow.

  • Study the devices that will form your IoT network.

If your IoT solution involves tracking or monitoring activities, study the variety of devices that may complete the network. The data should always be easily collectible and accessible to most positively affect the impact and effectiveness of an IoT network.

  • Ensure security protection of your IoT devices.

IoT devices connected into a network, as opposed to devices that use Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone (i.e., health wearables, smart watches), are accessed directly through the Internet. To ensure security, the devices need to be organized into a closed end limited access network.  Regular automated traffic monitoring is advised with secure regular backups. One security idea is to have the ability to remotely lock or destroy data if necessary.

  • Choose an expert team with a strong technical lead.

There are a considerable number of components that need to be organized into a network. A highly important and effective alliance between participating IT experts and a business team is crucial. A strong technical lead will understand how an IoT project can easily come from a simple solution and grow in complexity. The ability to correctly phase the growth involving multiple technologies and system components demands a strong technical lead.
